Representing CfSA at the Arts and Minds Parliamentary Reception
By: Dr. Ruth Sayers (CfSA Vice-Chair)
On 15 July 2025, I was honoured to attend a The Arts and Minds Campaign’s Parliamentary Reception in the Attlee Suite, hosted by MP Polly Billington, as a guest of the National Education Union, representing The Council for Subject Associations.
The event brought together parliamentarians, educators and campaigners, with outstanding performances from young people, to champion every child’s right to study creative subjects. It was a powerful reminder of the role the arts play in nurturing imagination and enabling young people to create meaning together.
It was a pleasure to reconnect with Laura Nicholson from One Dance UK and to meet new colleagues such as Kate Page, Headteacher at Ricards Lodge High School, who is embedding creativity across the curriculum despite the challenges.
The Arts and Minds campaign calls for:
▪️ The right for every child to study creative subjects
▪️ Fully restored arts funding in schools
▪️ An end to ‘exam factory’ culture
▪️ A broad, balanced curriculum with creativity at its heart
Composer and Radio Presenter Jack Pepper introduced a brilliant performance from The Flames Collective, part of UD Music’s flagship programme supported by Music for Youth. Young musicians Colbie Ashby, Nad Etsioni and Liv Channer performed with professional assurance and exceptional talent.
While Steve Coogan wasn’t present, his support is strong:
“Access to creative subjects shouldn’t be limited to private school students or those whose parents can afford extra-curriculars.”
Polly Billington gave a moving reflection on how the arts are fundamental to the human condition. She reminded us that many young imaginations are waiting to flourish, if only they are given the opportunity.
Over 10,000 people have already supported the campaign. You can add your name at:
