Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (Literacy)

Literacy, as defined by the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE), encompasses a range of competencies including reading, writing, speaking, and listening. We emphasise the role of high-quality children’s literature and effective teaching practices in developing these skills. Our approach integrates cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions of literacy, aiming to enable students to interpret books and write in variety of contexts.

Our work raises the achievement of children’s reading and writing by helping schools to teach literacy creatively and effectively, putting quality children’s books at the heart of all learning. We provide a wide range of professional literacy training, including our flagship Power of Reading programme, at our Centre in London, in locations across England and online for teachers in the UK and around the world.
