British Ecological Society
Subject description: Ecology sits in the science curriculum, appearing throughout biology across all key stages and covering living things, habitats, ecosystems, biodiversity and environmental change. It is also rooted across all subject areas: in geography, it deepens understanding of environments and human influence; in maths, it supports data handling and measurement; in English, it provides opportunities for debate, persuasive writing, and informed communication. Art and design draw inspiration from nature, design & technology explores sustainable materials and solutions, computing enhances enquiry through data logging and modelling, and PSHE/citizenship uses ecological themes to explore ethics, responsibility, and stewardship. The British Ecological Society recognises that by embedding ecology in the wider curriculum, you can increase engagement, understanding and a stronger connection to nature.
