DramaCommunity cohesion and the prevention of violent extremism
A list of resources for teachers to use in the classroom
| Resource Title and Teacher Guidance | Brief Description of the Resource | Accessibility | |
| 1 | Drama for Learning and Creativity (D4LC) | This
website is linked to a successful national school improvement
initiative (supported by QCDA) that offers a comprehensive bank of free
drama lessons, several of which help teachers to develop a range of themes around community cohesion.
The lessons have been created, trialled and donated by classroom
teachers, for classroom teachers and the website also has an online
discussion forum that teachers from all around the world can take part
in. www.d4lc.org KS 1&2 (also with some lessons for KS 3, 4 & 5) |
Fully accessible. |
| 2 | The Island | This drama lesson, which uses the storyline of the picture book The Island, by Armin Greder as its stimulus, explores how an insular, fearful
island community respond with hostility to an outsider. This resource
gives teachers and whole classes of pupils the opportunity to enter the
story in role and to challenge and avoid violent actions
and responses from within a fiction. In character, pupils can decide to
create an enlightened island community that engages with a man arriving
by raft humanely, thus producing a better outcome. See attached Word document lesson plan KS 2 (but readily adaptable for KS 3) |
Fully accessible. This resource has also been identified for use in Primary English. |
| 3 | The Conquerors | These two drama lessons use the storyline of the picture book The Conquerors,
by David McKee as their stimulus. The book deals with the military
invasion of a small peaceful country and the positive effect on the
soldiers (and their home country) of being open to learning about and appreciating peace and cultural diversity. Lesson A offers differentiated drama activities on the storyline for Gifted & Talented,
EAL and SEN pupils and Lesson B emphasises possible cross-curricular
studies linked to the story drama that can be developed from Lesson A. See attached pdf lesson plan A and Word document lesson plan B KS 2 |
Difficult concepts for young people with learning difficulties. SEN teachers will need to differentiate to meet needs of individuals and non-specialist drama teachers may need additional guidance. |
| 4 | The Green Children of Woolpit | These materials, including a lesson plan, monologue and cross-curricular studies, are based on the 12th century legend The Green Children of Woolpit
that is still very much relevant today. The story tells of two migrant
children who arrive from another world and try to settle in a medieval
Suffolk village, therefore these resources can help support teaching
and learning about cultural diversity, migration and integration. The drama brings the feelings and dilemmas of the story alive and supports active, positive, whole-class engagement, action and reflection in role. See attached Word document lesson plan and Word document story monologue KS 2 (however, a KS 3 drama scheme of work is also signposted) |
Fully accessible. |
| 5 | The Arrival | This
resource offers teachers and their pupils the opportunity to use
imagined experience, role and collective narrative development to
engage with a number of key themes including migration, cultural diversity, separation and identity.
The detailed step-by-step Scheme of Work using imagined and
non-specific national boundaries and cultures, and the extensive range
of drama strategies can help pupils to develop understandings of the
migrant experience and to reflect on the ways in which existing
communities respond to new arrivals. See attached Word document Scheme of Work KS 3&4 and above |
Fully accessible. |
| 6 | Lorry | These
teaching materials and strategies offer 3 poems and a dramatic
monologue as stimulus, all of which can be used as starting points for
a collective whole group drama on the theme of migration and cultural diversity.
Teachers are guided through different drama strategies, which provide
students opportunities to share imagined experience and reflect on the
reasons why people undertake great hardship and danger to build new
lives in other lands. This work can also help students to develop
understandings of the migrant experience and reflect on the ways in
which existing communities respond to new arrivals. See attached Word document Teaching Materials and Strategies KS 3&4 |
Difficult concepts for young people with learning difficulties. SEN teachers will need to differentiate to meet needs of individuals. |
| 7 | From Ancient Grudge... to new mutiny | This resource, based on Act 1 Scene 1 of William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet can be used as a model of street violence and group hatred,
which can be explored using a wide range of drama strategies. This Unit
of Work, which lends itself to an analytical and discursive approach to
the sources of violence and the structure of conflict escalation, will give students opportunities to engage in conflict resolution
from within a shared fiction. Teachers and students are also offered
the opportunity to reflect on contemporary concerns relating to knife
crime. See attached Word document Unit of Work – drama strategies KS 3&4 |
Difficult concepts for young people with learning difficulties. SEN teachers will need to differentiate to meet needs of individuals. This resource has also been identified for use in Secondary English. |
| 8 | Once They Get started | This cross-curricular drama scheme uses a poem as its starting point and offers opportunities to explore issues of exclusion, prejudice, victimisation and group hatred
through a range of drama strategies. The scheme makes use of movement,
shape, sound, language and role as pupils examine the key issues from
within an imagined narrative. The work set out here encourages groups
and individuals to discuss key issues, and evaluate alternative
responses. See attached Word document Drama scheme and strategies KS 3&4 |
Fully accessible, however SEN teachers may need to differentiate to meet needs of individuals. |
